6.Ribbons and Scarves

Widow-like characters showed up in mourning wear on quite a few runways, and of course, this kind of look could not be complete without a veil.

The vintage, neo-noir vibes at Rodarte were only enhanced by the addition of veils. Many of the models wore short, netted veils that were just long enough to cover their faces. The veils came in colors matched to the outfits, and some were even topped with realistic-looking flowers.

The black veil worn by each one of the models at Elie Saab was quite simple and extremely delicate. Made of a totally transparent black net with a few odd black polka dots, the veils weren’t readily noticeable despite being wrapped around to cover the models’ faces.

A ton of other designers sent models out on the runway in veils, including Giambattista Valli, Chocheng, Carolina Herrera, and Christopher John Rogers.

7. Strings & Cords

Tying off a braid with a random cord or just taking a string and wrapping it around your head… needless to say, strings and cords represented the DIY side of the fall 2020 hair accessory trends.

A length of string wrapped around a mussed interpretation of a Greek goddess updo at Antonio Marras gave an off-kilter touch to the look. Tiny braids at Max Mara were added randomly throughout the hair and then punched up with colorful, threadbare cords tied around their ends.

8. Upside-Down Headbands

It might be more of a styling trend than a true hair accessory trend, but with that said, you now have the option of wearing your headband upside down, especially if it’s in order to adequately frame an updo.

This was how a few models at Badgley Mischka wore heavily jeweled headbands, which allowed their high chignons to stand out even more. Models wore upside-down headbands wrapped with cushiony satin at Fendi, though here it was to allow magnificently twisted buns to stand out.

9. Sporty

A hair tie isn’t always enough for keeping your hair out of the way during a workout, so we appreciated the sportier fall 2020 hair accessories that designers presented.

Logo-emblazoned headbands at Adeam looked like the perfect sporty accessory for keeping sweat off of your face. Slimmer chords at Chromat also had a sporty vibe and were used either to embellish braids or as headbands to keep hair away from the face.

10. Large Hair Jewelry and Headpieces

For those really wanting to stand out, there were some hair accessories that we think are easiest to describe as hair jewelry, as those mimicked the fall 2020 jewelry trends. These were large, jeweled headpieces that would be impossible to ignore.

We’re used to ostentatious uses of jeweled accessories at Area, but we were still surprised by the wrap-around crystal-studded headpieces that a few of the models wore on their heads. Things were comparatively tame at Gucci, with crystal-studded headbands that draped over the ears and were matched to long, crystal-studded earrings.

Finally, Naeem Khan presented crown-like headpieces made of metal and jewels, with a purposefully asymmetrical design. The final effect was regal but otherworldly.

11. Bandanas

Wrapping a bandana around your head for fall? It’s more likely than you think since bandanas were some of the more common fall 2020 hair accessories.

Most of the models at Christian Dior had long scarves tied around their heads like bandanas, giving bad girl vibes to outfits that were otherwise quite tame. The scarves were printed with dots or with the old-school Dior logo.

Bandanas added to the hippie look at Gucci, with a few of the flower child models wearing triangular bandanas covered in floral prints.
